1.
There is no sunflower I see There is no sunflower in me No abundant field planted in my soul No nothing there will grow to be loved and cared for Then your voice comes through Like a howl on the wind Like a warm storm in spring Like a blue moon in June I see a sunflower in bloom I see a sunflower in you
2.
Experience 01:46
Experience gets lost in the need for a snap A memory it is, then gone The river won't stop as you catch your breath It just keeps rushing on Be yourself the other Graham said For we within time are a fray And as the lights gleam in the distance they lay My old life fades away
3.
Wasting Days 02:56
Wasting days like I'm wasting water in my wine Make it smoother so I can keep it down But at least you make me try Grabbing for something that's only in my head Rarer still are the times they manifest But at least you make me try When it seems I've hit the shore And I've fastened to a cleat decaying, rusted, ocean-worn From what I can see We all sink eventually But we both know there's something to saying we But at least you make me try Despite all that I might say To convince myself of something That isn't true anyway From what I can see The page turns eventually And we both know there's something to saying we
4.
Run for your life There's a gathering storm outside And those thunderheads are grinning with delight While you're getting high Late in the night Run for your life This town's next in line That night we drank in the parking lot rewired your mind If nothing really matters Why do you try All those wasted weekends Thrown on as fuel for the fire Shining bright, but casting no light On the path to your desires Counterfeit contentment led you astray Run for your life By Wednesday you'll be gone And before you that lightning flashes on But the only light that shines on you Is coming from your phone
5.
If you are the sun on a cold day Then I'm like the snow For I soften when you shine
6.
Nine Hours 03:59
Nine hours from the Pacific coast and I already miss it Outside New England's shape starts to shift Skeletal trees poke through the snow like daggers I have nothing to do but exist What kind of life is this Jumping ship for a nomadic life with no risk Arms wrapped around my chest in the cold Trembling, searching for warmth "M Train" called to me like an omen While you wait patiently in New York City What kind of life is this Jumping ship for a nomadic life with no risk Brief as the setting sun Is happiness spent far away and on the run
7.
I'd like to beat up time with a big old stick And desert it inert in the rain Throw out my watch and replace it with a tattoo Of a watch or my latest excuse I want to grow my arms to 1 AU To hold the sun just right on the horizon Make sure the sky is purple and pink No I won't be satisfied with just blue But you can't do it No you can't do it I wish I had the power to jump inside pictures And relive those moments for a while Not change a thing, just live in a dream Of nostalgia leaves that stay forever green I want to be my best friend one day Be there for myself when I'm in need To sing myself some weird lullabies And rock myself into the next life
8.
On the Mend 04:23
It was the first time I opened my blinds And really let the sun come in Despite all the times I'd run and hide Afraid of what another might have said On the mend I longed for a time that could not be tapped into again On the mend It felt good to float on but that affluent came to an end It was the first time I'd opened my blinds And really let the sun come in Despite all the times I'd closed my eyes And realized I wasn't a friend On the mend So long to aimless, windless sinking ship I was in I'm holding onto a friend On the mend Even light from the moon exposes weakened branches so thin I'm hanging on by a thread On the mend On the mend On the mend On the mend I watched you tear that hole in the sky I watched you as you flew away and said goodbye I watched you tear that hole in the sky I watched you as you flew away and said goodbye On the mend On the mend On the mend On the mend

about

Alternate Storm to a Mislaid Vision was originally called “Weird Lullabies.” This title can be imagined as the writing prompt for all the songs on the album. How can I write a song that is both soothing and unsettling? The first phase was writing soft songs on acoustic guitar with lyrics that were the farthest things from a child’s lullaby—about self-worth, drug abuse, nostalgia, relationships with lovers and friends, depression, anxiety, apathy, astronomy, and more.

Then as preproduction for the album began, the goal became balancing catchiness and intrigue with the “weird.” The album’s opening track, “Ode to a Sunflower,” poses jarring free jazz brutality against earnest and optimistic lyrics about a lover.

We recorded the album in two days at Sunwood Recordings: a chicken barn turned recording studio near Ithaca, NY. It was a whirlwind laying the tracks down while trying to finish in time to beat a blizzard intersecting our route back to NYC. It felt fitting. Recorded to tape on an analog board with vintage mics, the album is gritty and tangible. Ben Seretan lent lap steel on two of the tracks, adding to the sweet but somber tone of the album overall. Guitar, bass, drums, piano, lap steel, and saxophone are the only instruments on the album, with some magic during mixing.

As this independent project has sat in waiting for the last two years, we’ve looked at it from every possible angle and have discovered that the contradiction has created a lasting relatability. Capturing the constant state of flux most of us live in, comfort and discomfort—the future of human existence and the relief of a meme—hand in hand all at once, all the time. Meandering and difinitive at times, “Weird Lullabies” turned into Alternate Storm to a Mislaid Vision.
